A New Brunswick man termed the "mastermind" of one of the largest insurance fraud rings in New Jersey was sentenced yesterday to 29 years in state prison.
The state studied the operation, which ran from 1995 to 1999, in which carloads of people ran into one another, crashed into trees or concrete barriers in Elizabeth, Perth Amboy, New York City and other locations.
The passengers, recruited by "runners" hired by Bandy and Castillo, were paid or coaxed into filing false claims in return for hefty insurance settlements.
