So i happened to look at pam's credit card statement today and noticed that AOL was still charging us 5 months after we cancelled. Called the number and the cancellation department said that we didn't cancel - it was marked as a 'save' -- in other words the rep convinced me to stay with AOL instead of cancel. If you read my AOL Sucks post you know that is impossible and didn't happen. I hate AOL and this experience confirmed it - they are totally lying to get their numbers and reps are not processing account cancellations, likely in order to reach their required numbers or bonuses.
The cancellation guy of course could only cancel and then transferred me to billings (obviously outsourced to India) who tried to convince me I didn't cancel. They are such idiots - what should have been handled as "we're sorry, our mistake" had to escalate in to a full on argument. She agreed to refund 2 months because 'that is all we can do" when I refused to accept that finally got the 'full refund' but since I can actually do math I wasn't happy with that because it was still a month short. She tried to explain that it was their billing cycle - except that i cancelled before the date she wanted to charge. To make a very long story short we ended up getting the full amount of months refunded.
Clearly they are institutionally trying to rip people off - if they are such a great service then why go to such lengths to keep charging customers - there is no reason to make it so difficult for a customer to cancel when it is clear they want to cancel and then to lie over and over ("you didn't cancel" - even though there is not a single login to the account after that call, 'that is the full amount we can refund' - even though it turns out you can refund it all, etc.). Certainly it was a mistake for me to ever sign up with them in the first place, but I needed a short-term internet service and didn't ahve a connection to download netzero or someone else - I was also interested to see how they were now days (did I mention I was actually a 'charter subscriber' to AOL many years ago).
Whatever you do - don't sign up, and if you did sign up cancel and switch to anyone else - and make sure they actually cancel your account!

I'm really late replying to this but AOL still sucks. It's a pain in the ass to cancel them. They practically beg for you to stay and ask numerous questions about why your leaving them. I recently moved and canceled my aol account or so I thought so. My father calls me and tells me they sent something saying I needed to sign it and return it back to them before my account cancellation was active. All that after the the tech told me my account would be cancelled within 2 months. I'm never going back to them.

The Attorney Generals Office makes credit card companies do right by their customer so can't that office do anything about AOL? There must be a government agency that can stop AOL from ripping off people.

Hey, Natasha...When you're done (ok I had to edit this out), why don't you log on to AOL and search for your f***** brain. You ****. If anyone wanted your lame excuse for an opinion, we would have beaten it out of your mom. You crusty *************** hound. ****** you very much! AOL BLOWS, and obviously, so do you. I KNOW for a fact that aol is EVIL! They lie and yes I write down everything and take names when i talk to them. No you didn't cancel and I don't see that your being charged must be taught before you get to work for them. I get so mad when talking to them I shake. If you like to get screwed over then sure go with them. Right now I am having good luck with mfire. Everyone that has aol good luck if you ever want to switch over.
